I have received a number of e-mails and phone calls regarding the need for a dog park in Makiki. Are there folks out there interested in working towards identifying a place for dogs to roam? What do you think about the need for a dog park in Makiki? Reply here, or contact me here at Makiki Talks to let me know that you would be willing to help organize such an efffort!
Hi all, I'm in huge support of the dog park and am happy to provide manpower (myself and boyfriend) :) Does anyone know where we stand? My Craigslist post about it didn't get too many hits :) Thank goodness for this site! Thanks!

At are August Maikiki Neighborhood Board meeting, we passed a motion to support a dog park in the district. We had a group show up with plans to build a fenced off dog area in a little used area of Maikiki Park. At that same meeting we tabled a second motion to allow animals to use the park. One members only wanted dogs and not other animals. At this time Maikiki park does not allow any animals. This rule could change soon.

I'm concern that most people that 1st came to address the neighborhood board about the dog park last year has not returned to a board meeting.
There was ONE meeting which filled the little room with all these Dog Park lovers and as soon as people didnt get the 1st location proposed (Makiki Park, behind tennis court) people STOPPED coming. Every month there after I have not seen another person show up yet.
I first started coming to board meetings because of the Dog Park and have continued to go to every one there after. I also feel fustrated that we had a big crowd show up for ONE meeting and that was it.. I take my dog all over and was not happy with the choice of putting it behind the tennis court near the Freeway but the area near the Water tank up Makiki Drive seems like a great choice. I'm all for a Dog Park but not one that would be close to a Freeway.
Makiki needs to serve everyone in the community. People are first, however pets have an impact on people's health which makes the community healthy. A dog park would help everyone, the owners get out and socialize, the dogs also socialize and exercise, children who can't own a pet can get aquainted and learn respect for animals. People that are not dog people can stay away and can use the sidewalks freely. Pet parents are usually (especially those who advocate a dog park) are responsible and respectful adults and dog parks are not unregulated. Every dog park I have been to on Oahu make sure all dogs and people stay respectful and clean. All it takes especially for Makiki District Park would be to secure both ends from Makiki St. and Keeaumoku St.behind the tennis courts add water, and cover the drains along the freeway which should be more secure anyway as small children could enter as they are now, an accident waiting to happen.. Trees are already in place, the area is only used for illegal activities now. The freeway would drown sounds and most people use a dog park in the mornings and evenings for about an hour. Most people in Makiki would be walking to the park. Those that oppose could offer alternatives. And why only one dog park? There are many mini areas too and could be used to those that live close to that location. That way not any one park would be crowded. But let's just concentrate on one for now. Getting one in place sooner rather than later would only benefit everyone. This is the 21st century let's catch up. Men are on the moon building and living in space stations, can't we just get one little dog park on the map in Makiki? I personally travel on the bus from Makiki to Diamond Head to exercise my dog off leash three times a week because I cherish my service dog and he deserves to be free to socialize and exercise without fear from people, cars, bikes, distraction free. I can't always afford doggie daycare. Without him being healthy I would not be as healthy as I age.
Some of us are hoping to reactivate, reorganize, and regain some of the momentum for a Dog Park at Makiki District Park. Please join us next Thursday, March 11, 2010 at St. Clement's Church Parish Hall from 5-7 pm. The Farmers' Market will be open for those who might want to pick up dinner or a snack while we meet.
Street parking is available but limited at this time. For those who live nearby, I would encourage walking or busing it to St. Clement's Church (corner of Wilder Ave. & Makiki Street).
Please feel free to let others know about this meeting - we want to invite all interested Makiki dog lovers, especially those who are willing to help with our organizing and planning efforts! A flyer has been attached here that can be circulated to friends and neighbors.
