Over the past two years, I have been a part of something pretty special here in Makiki - the Makiki Community Library. This little library, nestled in Makiki District Park, is a unique gem for our urban community. Run entirely by volunteers and two part-time library managers, Makiki Community Library is funde…

I'll be at the Farmer's Market at the Parish of St. Clement's on October 8th from 4:30-7:30. Come by the Friends of the Makiki Community Library booth to buy a book or a t-shirt, or just to talk story. I'll be issuing free library cards and handing out flyers about our upcoming events in the library. Donations are welcome.

I'm not exactly sure what the letter of the law is for skateboarding on the sidewalk but I'm sure it's legal. I'm also pretty sure that skateboarders are supposed to yield to pedestrians--again I would have to double check this as well.
Last night around 8 PM in Kapolei my (disabled) mother was walking on the sidewalk with her neighbor Rainbow, also disabled but in an electric wheelchair, when a speeding skateboarder crashed into her propelling her into the street before landing on top of her.…

I'm not going anywhere so when you see me around please say hi.
Hopefully I will see some of you for the next Makiki Dog Park meeting on August 12th at the MCLC.

I’m a bit chagrined to admit this, especially since I’ve been a lifelong resident of the area that is home to
The Contemporary Museum, but here it goes…Saturday, July 11, 2009 was my FIRST
ArtSpree adventure ever! If there’s any consolation, it was a first that I got to share with Mike, my hubby (he’s been to TCM before, but never to ArtSpree), and Emma, my daughter (her very f…

Makiki and Hawaii have lost a dedicated public servant with the passing of Councilmember Duke Bainum. Among the cast of characters that make up Hawaii's political community, Duke was a bright, articulate, passionate, independent, and willing to disagree but never disagreeable voice of reason.
In the short time that I worked with him for the people of Makiki, he exemplified all that it means to be a public servant. Duke could be found throughout the Makiki community - coming to a Library dedicat…

On March 18, 2009, before a special Joint Session of the Hawai`i State Legislature at the State Capitol House Chambers, I had the honor of introducing Tom Gill, a member of the State's very first State Legislature. Today, Hawai`i lost this passionate, courageous voice for social justice. In his honor, I share the following remarks with you:

In just a few hours,
Governor Linda Lingle will be announcing plans to close the budget shortfall caused by the Council of Revenues’ most recent reduced revenue forecast and to “outline the state’s path to economic recovery.” All of Hawaii, but this legislator in particular, will be listening carefully to what she has to say.
As a sitting novice legislator, it has been frustrating to go through the 2009 legislative session. There is no question in my mind tha…

Aloha to the current (& hopefully future) members of Makiki Talks. I’m here because I want to help build a community – both our on-line Makiki Talks community and the Makiki community-at-large.
When I was a senior in college, more than 13 years ago, friends were just beginning to use e-mail with their university accounts. Who would have thought then the kind of influence the Internet and computer technology would have on human relationships, commerce, education, communities, and (maybe last…
